Because of this, the decision was made to rely on the transcriber’s judgement. Therefore, the text marked as overlapped was considered within the talk it occurred, and was treated according to the operational definitions described in Section 3.1. Thus, if text was marked as overlapping, if it did not interrupt the turn-holder’s talk, and if it did not receive a response, the text was categorised as a backchannel.

8.4.4 Data Classification

The data were first categorised as Backchannel, Interruption or Other according to the operational definitions in Section 8.4.1. Once this preliminary categorisation had been completed, a structural classification of the backchannels was done. The structure of the backchannel is the dependent variable of interest in this study. This classification is discussed in more detail in Section 8.4.5. After this, each observation was further annotated for a range of sociolinguistic, interactional and grammatical variables, used as independent variables in analysing which factors most reliably predict the selection of particular backchannel structures. These variables and their annotation are discussed in more detail in Section 8.4.6
